Aspiration before injecting dermal filler is a safety step taken to reduce the risk of injecting filler into a blood vessel (intravascular injection), which can lead to serious complications.

Here’s why it’s important:

🌸To avoid vascular complications - injecting filler into an artery or vein can cause blockages.

🌸To ensure correct placement - aspiration helps confirm that the needle or cannula is not inside a blood vessel, ensuring that filler is placed in the intended place it should be.

How does aspiration work?

When we pull back on the syringe plunger, blood will enter the syringe if the needle is inside a blood vessel. If no blood appears, then it’s safe to proceed with the injection.
